"The Story Behind the Painting: Inspired by Music, Color, and Strength"

Many of my contemporary artworks begin with a spark of inspiration—a song, a hue, a fleeting moment that captures the essence of resilience and transformation. One of my latest paintings, ‘Through the Water,’ is a powerful visual narrative born from sound, color, and emotion.

This particular painting, “Through The Water,” draws from two key sources: the rebellious energy of Idles's song "POP POP POP" and the vibrant tones of Pantone's Peach Fuzz and Chartreuse. These elements guided me in shaping a raw and refined painted narrative—a celebration of persistence in facing challenges.

A Powerful Artistic Collaboration

The painting was showcased during a few-hour “Neu Dawn” exhibition in Mobile, Alabama, in December 2024. I collaborated with a fantastic curator of the show and costume designer, Courtney Mathews, to bring the artwork to life uniquely. The process was deeply symbolic: I first painted the artwork, sharing a partial sketch and work in progress of the work with her, and then she built a costume inspired by it. Her interpretation transformed the visual story into a living narrative, worn by her model during the exhibition.

Courtney’s interpretation added a new layer of depth to the painting. Her costume, worn by a model during the exhibition, reflected themes of resilience and transformation. Here’s how she described her creation:

“She wasn't just the rainbow in the background. She made it through all the trials and tribulations of being a powerful woman in this stressful world and became the rainbow…”

The model, Courtney’s best friend, was navigating personal hardships at the time. The costume became a beacon of hope, reminding her—and all of us—that we can become the rainbow even in life’s darkest moments.
